Speed Painting Doodle... "Grandma's House" (uploaded again)

??? It disappeared after the first time I loaded it. ??? Here it is again... :-/ Yes. It's a "doodle". No plan what so ever. Just scribbling around with Photoshop's brushes, checking things out away from my normal style. I was pretty much making it up as I went along. Just under 2 hours of this messing around. I might still tighten it a bit. Photoshop CS on a mac... Wacom INtuos 3 Snaps Pro X Capture Adobe After Effects for time-lapse

Speed Painting a Werewolf...Again.

I am still trying to create a real time speed painting in under 10 minutes. Here again, I tried with a werewolf. I used to love drawing werewolves when I was a kid, so the technique is embedded in my head, making it perfect for this attempt. Alas, I still went over 10 minutes, and again the final time ended up being 20. So heck with it- here it is time compressed. Photoshop burn tool, with color mode brush.

Speed Painting With Acrylics...

I felt motivated to do this one from the couple of comments on the "Speed Painting Photo Realism" video I uploaded not too long ago... The majority of comments I get are extremely positive and wonderful, but as an artist I still get challenged if even just one person publicly suspects me of cheating the process. In this case, since I have been using photoshop-- some think that there's apossibility that I am "tracing" a layer, and editing that part OUT of the vids. I can see how that might seem possible to some (if you are not looking closely at how the detail is coming together). Apparently, some people don't believe it is possible to actually freehand draw and get accurate proportions without erasing a lot, or tracing. So here is a vid of me painting freehand from scratch with acrylics (which dry extremely fast making it difficult to get smooth blending) without sketching it first. This excercise is about 10 times harder to do than digital painting, but I wanted to demonstrate the freehand drawing/painting capabilities that are behind all of my work... Actual time to do this was about 3 hours.

Speed Painting Photorealism... Again.

Another digital painting done from scratch in photoshop using Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. Artwork is completely freehand drawn, with reference photo set off to the side for glancing at. No tracing... ;-) Actual time to do pic was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake-- simply do a little research. It's as easy as clicking on my username to see the list of all of my other videos. There you will find an array of different subjects and different mediums... Including photo real techniques with real paint. It it's a pretty reasonable conclusion that if I can do the things I do with real paint-- why would I feel the need or insecurity to fake it with the "less impressive" digital mediums? Why waste my time? You could also consider the efforts it would take to fake such a thing- consider the layering of the shadows and gradients... Look at how carefully it is done in these vids. There is a visible build-up of LAYERS of tones shadows and colors. To fake something like that would take so much effort, why would a guy who can do all of the other OBVIOUS traditional medium paintings on the same channel waste his time? TO MANY PEOPLE ASK: Why "photorealism"? Why not just use a camera? The answer is simple. I've made the point many times in my replies, comments and descriptions. But I'll make it clearer here for those who do not understand: It's for practice. It is the same as a musician practicing scales, so that he can write better songs...Or even a musician who plays a song from another famous musician on a CD-- also to make himself better... To inspire/aspire to become better at the craft/skill. It's the same with the art. Sure I am just acting like a human camera and re-creating every detail and color I see-- but that's where the conditioning is. Same as that musician that is replicating the sounds of a scale or someone else's song. (Why not just say to the musician, "why bother playing that song? Just put in the CD?" ) The fact that it is all freehand and controlled by my judgement makes it so valuable to attempt.... I have to be able to see and recognize exact tones of color, and be able to recreate it with extreme accuracy from scratch. I must be able to recognize every detail and the consistency that makes that detail REAL. It strengthens my abilities to be able to create works of art that come from my imagination. Aside from practice, it is also a very commonly sought skill in the commercial trades to be able to mimic real-life with art. In addition to that, it does entertain the majority. So there you go.

Speed Painting Photo Realism

I did this as an excercise for the purpose of, quite simply, practice. It's been a while since I attempted anything photo-real... It's very good to do this kind of thing because it strengthens your freehand drawing abilities, as well as developing an eye for detail. Freehand drawn in photoshop cs2 (from a reference photo off to the side) with a wacom tablet. time-lapsed... real time was about 3 and a half hours. "Dragon Princess" (corrected sequence)

I was inspired to do this after browsing the website of Jerry Vanderstelt yesterday afternoon. If you've never been there, I recommend you go now. www.vandersteltstudio.com The man is a master of sci-fi fantasy art... Very enjoyable. I was looking through his fantasy gallery noticing how he could take some of the most relaxed poses and make such dramatic masterpieces out of them... So I dug some older photos I took of my wife that I had taken outside, and oneof them particularly struck me. The sun was shining on her face, and the warmth of her skin and blonde hair was reflecting on the tree bark she was standing by... This immediately inspired me to do a similar set-up with a young woman standing up against a fantasy creature. The actual time it took me to do this painting was about 4 hours. It's digitally drawn freehand in Photoshop CS, with a Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. Screen capture software is Snaps Pro X on a Mac. TIme-lapsed in Adobe After Effects, and mixed down with MPEG STREAMCLIP. Enjoy!
