OVAL B&W GESSO & OIL PAINTING DEMO ROSS STYLE- GARY GARRETT

I wanted to try a Bob Ross style B&W gesso painting, coloring it with oil glazes. So, as a second tribute to Bob Ross, I decided to use that technique on an 8x10 oval canvas. Starting with black gesso, let dry, then papertoweling in a white gesso background, then painting in the mid and foreground landscape in mixtures of the two gessos. Since the background works from light to dark at the edges, work the color of each tree dark to light so it will stand out against the background. The foreground vegetation is simple done with an old 1 inch brush, dabbing it. Let the gesso dry thoroughly... about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then apply a thin coat of varnsh, tinting it with oil colors right on the canvas. I used tiny bits of Pthalo Blue, Yellow ochre and sap green, white and burnt umbra. This painting style is REALLY FAST, hense again, the very short timelapse video.... this technique could be used with ANY sized canvas.. stretched or panel, even multiple panels. You could do a livingroom-size painting in an very short time... TRY IT YOURSELF...IT'S EASY, AND VERY REWARDING!!!! It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds). THANKS FOR WATCHING. IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO, PLEASE RATE IT AND/OR LEAVE A COMMENT... THANKS

Red Dingy on Mandarin Shoreline - Gary Garrett Oil Painting Demonstration

Please click "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY" This is an 8x6 inch Black & White gesso underpainting with oil glazes painted August 28, 2008 from a photo I shot on a previous paintout on the banks of the St. johns River in Mandarin Florida. I have briefly explored this gesso underpainting idea here on YouTube before, the big difference here is that the under painting in this painting has much far detail and texture. It was painted totally as a greyscale image, concentrating on textures and grey values BEFORE the oil glaze colors were applied. In this painting, the oil glazes seem to me to be far too heavy and obscured a lot of the greyscale image, forcing me to either wipe off the glazes or repaint the areas masked by the oils. I chose the latter here just to proceed with this experiment. I will try again in the near future... perhaps a larger image will try to apply a more transparent oil glaze. When done correctly, this technique can quickly yeild photo-realistic images... I did not achieve that here, but I am quite pleased with the colors and realism in the water transparency and reflections in this one. If you like this video, or learned something from it, please leave me a comment. Thanks for Watching!!! Music is Diane Arkenstone: track 9, "Waters of Life" from her "Healing Spirit CD"... which can be purcheased and downloaded at dianearkenstone.com Thank You Diane... GREAT MUSIC Bird songs and marsh sounds recorded during previous paintouts are also mixed into the soundtrack in the voice over channel of my video editor.

In Mid October, the First Coast Plein Air Painters had our paintout at the Little Jetties (Mayport Florida) where the St. Johns River meets the Intracoastal Waterway, just west of the Mayport Naval Station. This 8x5 inch oil fine-grained canvas panel painting is from one of those photos looking west. My palette is WHITE-CAD YELLOW LIGHT & MEDIUM - CAD RED - CRIMSON - ULTRAMARINE BLUE -PAYNE'S GREY & WHITE. My medium is DRYING LINSEED OIL & LIQUIN IMPASTO gel. All paints & mediums are Winsor & Newton. The undercoat is painted with brushes and papertowels, the color coat is painted with a small palette knife. Thank you for watching

OIL PASTEL DEMO MARSH LANDSCAPE - GARY GARRETT PAINTING

This one is an 11x14 Oil Pastel drawing using Cray-Pas, Mungyo, and Loew Cornell oil pastels on Canson acid free paper #501 "Tobacco" color paper. This drawing was made from sketches made last summer around St. Augustine's marshlands off the intracoastal waterway south of the fort, and north of Matanzas. It was a nice change of pace from my other recent paintings. I use a technique that layers color on color, then smeared together... usually I would use a paper shading taper (tortillon) to smear it... but not having any right now, i had to use my "built-in" smear stick (my finger) LOL. It was fun to do a pastel again. Hope you like it. It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds). If you do like it, please leave me a comment, and/or rate it by clicking on a star. the feedback has been great in letting me know what you want to see, or know, things that I may be able to help with. THANKS FOR WATCHING... KEEP PAINTING!
