Classical style speed painting #2 of a live model by Jonathan Hardesty
Hi Everyone, My name is Jonathan Hardesty and I teach and paint for a living. This painting was a quick sketch of a friend over a 1 hour and 20 minute period of time. I love doing these quick sketches of models because it is a nice departure from the longer, more involved pieces that I send to my gallery. These type of sketches, while not perfect, are fun because you can focus on capturing a person using your first impression. When something is an hour and 20 minutes you really need to move fast. You have to see things accurately from the beginning, place them, and then pretty much leave them. You don't have time to mess around with things too much. I paint exclusively from life and you can see the model there at the end taking a look at the painting. You can see more of my work at http://www.jonathanhardesty.com . I teach the classical methods online as well at http://www.classicalartonline.com . I get questions about my materials a lot as well so here is a list: Palette colors: (Rembrandt - Ivory Black, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian, Asphaltum, Transparent Oxide Red, Permanent Red Medium, Yellow Ochre Light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Lemon) (Gamblin - Alizarin Permanent) The medium I use is gamsol with about 25-30% poppy oil. I use silver grand prix filbert brushes, and langnickel 5590 sables. My canvas is Claessens Type 13 oil primed.

if video doesn't play click in the time-line this is layer four which i stopped at for this demo. however you can use as many layers as you want, if I'm doing a very finished painting then I would no doubt use many more In layer 3 i simply applied a warm glaze & adjusted the eye and forehead area colors and mediums used - same as for the underpainting color layer + cadmium orange (you don't necessarily need to use any colors other than the basic 4 that i mention, but use others if you want). this is the initial underpainting what your aiming to do here is define and fix edges and lines which could otherwise become lost in subsequent layers avoid creating edges you don't want by blurring them out using painting Medium colors used: permanent rose (red) cadmium yellow light french ultramarine (blue) titanium white brand: Griffin Alkyd fast drying oil color (alternatively you could use acrylic colors for this stage) Mediums: Liquin wearing gloves Disposable gloves should be considered when working with oil paints.
