Speed Painting - horse portrait in pastel (Billy)
A time lapse film of my painting of Billy, a stunning chestnut horse. I made it using pastel pencils (all brands) on sanded paper (Fisher 400). This was a commission for Billy's owners, and the painting is about 14x10". I hope you enjoy watching. To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The horse is done entirely with pastel pencils. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested. I don't do any teaching or tuition, I just make these videos from time to time because people seem to enjoy watching the process. Hope you do too... happy viewing!

Speed painting dog portrait in pastel (Setter)
A commissioned portrait of Jake the Gordon Setter, painted in pastel pencils (all brands) on sanded paper (Fisher 400). I wish I could really work this fast, but in reality it took about 20 hours. The painting measures about 18x16". To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. "Across the Universe" pastel art demo. Please rate!
Pastel art demonstration by Alice McMahon White, with music by The Beatles. Peace! www.amwhitestudio.com "Across the Universe" was in the works long before I ever heard about the recent movie release. It was inspired by my trip with my daughter to a Washington DC "march to end the war" protest at the Pentagon in March 17, 2007, last St. Patrick's Day. Truly a cooperative work, my girl gladly designed the protest sign, and planned her outfit, picking up activism buttons and the MAKE LOVE NOT WAR t-shirt, even painting her own jeans for her high school "patriotic day". Then she was a stoic and excellent model for my reference photos. The daisy in her hand is a nod to a shy young woman we met in DC. She never said a word, but passed out single yellow daisies to marchers all day. The rainbow is a symbol for St. Pat's Day, spring, peace stretching across the planet, light coming after the rain, and also for gay rights, as shown on one of the buttons on her jacket. The rainbow is reflected in the puddles at her feet, "pools of sorrow/waves of joy". No blood for oil... DO see the movie "Across the Universe" my favorite in a long time, and it's not just because I like the Beatles! Wishing for WORLD PEACE in 2008!

SPEED DRAWING PAINTING Pastel Chalk Angel and New Age Music!
Hello, I thought I would share the creation of a conceptual image (done in a cartoon/comic book/ graphic novel style) for a potential project. She may end up the central character for a forthcoming guided meditation. She is one of many Muse Goddesses from the realm of Aura-ohm. (More on that later) Note: If you happen to be a really skilled or experienced artist and would like to give me tips and pointers, or ideas you think would improve my style, send 'em over as comments. Please keep any critique's CONSTRUCTIVE and intellegent. Thank you:) I should also mention, I experienced some unusual (very positive) magic soon after drawing, painting / pastel chalk (ing) this while listening to the included song. OIL PASTEL DEMO MARSH LANDSCAPE - GARY GARRETT PAINTING
This one is an 11x14 Oil Pastel drawing using Cray-Pas, Mungyo, and Loew Cornell oil pastels on Canson acid free paper #501 "Tobacco" color paper. This drawing was made from sketches made last summer around St. Augustine's marshlands off the intracoastal waterway south of the fort, and north of Matanzas. It was a nice change of pace from my other recent paintings. I use a technique that layers color on color, then smeared together... usually I would use a paper shading taper (tortillon) to smear it... but not having any right now, i had to use my "built-in" smear stick (my finger) LOL. It was fun to do a pastel again. Hope you like it. It was time-lapsed using a Sony TRV25 in INTERVAL mode (1/2 second every 30 seconds).
