Lu Jianjun's Unique Realism Oil painting
I love his paintings. His work is unique realistic painting. His paintings are the world's few high-tech skills in painting. Fascinated me is his paintings are full of emotion.

Speed Painting With Acrylics...
I felt motivated to do this one from the couple of comments on the "Speed Painting Photo Realism" video I uploaded not too long ago... The majority of comments I get are extremely positive and wonderful, but as an artist I still get challenged if even just one person publicly suspects me of cheating the process. In this case, since I have been using photoshop-- some think that there's apossibility that I am "tracing" a layer, and editing that part OUT of the vids. I can see how that might seem possible to some (if you are not looking closely at how the detail is coming together). Apparently, some people don't believe it is possible to actually freehand draw and get accurate proportions without erasing a lot, or tracing. So here is a vid of me painting freehand from scratch with acrylics (which dry extremely fast making it difficult to get smooth blending) without sketching it first. This excercise is about 10 times harder to do than digital painting, but I wanted to demonstrate the freehand drawing/painting capabilities that are behind all of my work... Actual time to do this was about 3 hours.

Speed Painting Photorealism... Again.
Another digital painting done from scratch in photoshop using Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. Artwork is completely freehand drawn, with reference photo set off to the side for glancing at. No tracing... ;-) Actual time to do pic was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake-- simply do a little research. It's as easy as clicking on my username to see the list of all of my other videos. There you will find an array of different subjects and different mediums... Including photo real techniques with real paint. It it's a pretty reasonable conclusion that if I can do the things I do with real paint-- why would I feel the need or insecurity to fake it with the "less impressive" digital mediums? Why waste my time? You could also consider the efforts it would take to fake such a thing- consider the layering of the shadows and gradients... Look at how carefully it is done in these vids. There is a visible build-up of LAYERS of tones shadows and colors. To fake something like that would take so much effort, why would a guy who can do all of the other OBVIOUS traditional medium paintings on the same channel waste his time? TO MANY PEOPLE ASK: Why "photorealism"? Why not just use a camera? The answer is simple. I've made the point many times in my replies, comments and descriptions. But I'll make it clearer here for those who do not understand: It's for practice. It is the same as a musician practicing scales, so that he can write better songs...Or even a musician who plays a song from another famous musician on a CD-- also to make himself better... To inspire/aspire to become better at the craft/skill. It's the same with the art. Sure I am just acting like a human camera and re-creating every detail and color I see-- but that's where the conditioning is. Same as that musician that is replicating the sounds of a scale or someone else's song. (Why not just say to the musician, "why bother playing that song? Just put in the CD?" ) The fact that it is all freehand and controlled by my judgement makes it so valuable to attempt.... I have to be able to see and recognize exact tones of color, and be able to recreate it with extreme accuracy from scratch. I must be able to recognize every detail and the consistency that makes that detail REAL. It strengthens my abilities to be able to create works of art that come from my imagination. Aside from practice, it is also a very commonly sought skill in the commercial trades to be able to mimic real-life with art. In addition to that, it does entertain the majority. So there you go.

I did this as an excercise for the purpose of, quite simply, practice. It's been a while since I attempted anything photo-real... It's very good to do this kind of thing because it strengthens your freehand drawing abilities, as well as developing an eye for detail. Freehand drawn in photoshop cs2 (from a reference photo off to the side) with a wacom tablet. time-lapsed... real time was about 3 and a half hours. UPDATE: For the people that think this is fake-- simply do a little research. It's as easy as clicking on my username to see the list of all of my other videos. oil painting techniques ~ portrait 3/3 (layer 4)
if video doesn't play click in the time-line this is layer four which i stopped at for this demo. however you can use as many layers as you want, if I'm doing a very finished painting then I would no doubt use many more In layer 3 i simply applied a warm glaze & adjusted the eye and forehead area colors and mediums used - same as for the underpainting color layer + cadmium orange (you don't necessarily need to use any colors other than the basic 4 that i mention, but use others if you want). If you'd like to copy this painting for learning purposes that's fine part 1/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L--zMFxRzQA part 2/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MUEGpQY1rI&feature=related image http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mniland/media/portrait3.png website http://www.mniland.com

oil painting techniques ~ portrait 1/3 (underpainting 1 - edge layer)
this is the initial underpainting what your aiming to do here is define and fix edges and lines which could otherwise become lost in subsequent layers avoid creating edges you don't want by blurring them out using painting Medium colors used: permanent rose (red) cadmium yellow light french ultramarine (blue) titanium white brand: Griffin Alkyd fast drying oil color (alternatively you could use acrylic colors for this stage) Mediums: Liquin wearing gloves Disposable gloves should be considered when working with oil paints. Many pigments & mediums are toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. part 2/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MUEGpQY1rI&feature=related part 3/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYODbxECS7E&feature=response_watch website http://www.mniland.com

oil painting techniques ~ portrait 2/3 (underpainting 2 - colour layer)
this is the underpainting color layer (layer 2) here you determine the coloring and tonality of the painting you should aim to achieve roughly 80% accuracy to what the finished paintings colors will be - refinements to these can be made in subsequent layers before painting began a thin layer of painting medium was brushed over the surface making the application of color easier and easier to blend smooth with the fan brush colors used: permanent rose cadmium yellow light french ultramarine Titanium White brand: Winton oil color (or other) Mediums: refined linseed oil (or other) part 1/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L--zMFxRzQA part 3/3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYODbxECS7E&feature=response_watch website http://www.mniland.com
