Red Dingy on Mandarin Shoreline - Gary Garrett Oil Painting Demonstration
Please click "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY" This is an 8x6 inch Black & White gesso underpainting with oil glazes painted August 28, 2008 from a photo I shot on a previous paintout on the banks of the St. johns River in Mandarin Florida. I have briefly explored this gesso underpainting idea here on YouTube before, the big difference here is that the under painting in this painting has much far detail and texture. It was painted totally as a greyscale image, concentrating on textures and grey values BEFORE the oil glaze colors were applied. In this painting, the oil glazes seem to me to be far too heavy and obscured a lot of the greyscale image, forcing me to either wipe off the glazes or repaint the areas masked by the oils. I chose the latter here just to proceed with this experiment. I will try again in the near future... perhaps a larger image will try to apply a more transparent oil glaze. When done correctly, this technique can quickly yeild photo-realistic images... I did not achieve that here, but I am quite pleased with the colors and realism in the water transparency and reflections in this one. So I've put together the photos I took of my sculpture An tEach Uisce along with some notes on the creation process. An tEach Uisce is also known as the kelpie, it's a celtic water demon who liked to lure people onto it's back then give them a wild ride ending in drowning. This sculpture is about 6 inches tall and 9 inches long made using polymer clay and cold porcelain.

A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of, in most schools of thought, a fish, although their horizontal fin structure would be more indicative of an aquatic mammal. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures. The names comes from the Middle English mere in the obsolete sense 'sea' (as in maritime, and the the Latin mare, "sea") + maid(en). Much like sirens, mermaids would sometimes sing to sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or cause shipwrecks. Other stories would have them squeeze the life out of drowning men while trying to rescue them. They are also said to take them down to their underwater kingdoms.

Please click "WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY" 20x10 water mixable oil painting using Winsor & Newton Artisian colours. I used white, prussian blue and raw sienna in the background, with a "hot" color palette (mixed with a little of the prussian/sienna mix) for the boats and fishermen. Painted from an internet photo Aug 22-23, 2008 during the torrential downpour of tropical storm Fay... at those times when the power was on. Power went out during this video 3 times. I thought it would really be obvious during playback, but it is not. The oil stays wet as opposed to acrylics, reflecting my lighting in the video more than the smaller 8x10s I was experimenting with earlier, and my ceiling mounted camera pod has a narrow camera view, so the 20x10 canvas was moved back and forth under the camera to keep the area I was working on in frame.... I hope this movement was not too annoying or confusing. Taped using a Sony DCR TRV-25 camera set on 1 sec per 30 sec mode.
