Maestro, as you paint this picture would you tell me what-what's going on in your mind. Now the cross, the mystical vertical cross. Out of black paint, (...via con questo coso per... cortesia...) a cross comes down from the top left hand side of the canvas. (via con quella testa per cortesia!) he has just thrown a bunch of gold paint which has not only hit me in the face, (...ostia...) but has gone across the canvas to the applause of the crowd below. (...calma... aspetta... ahó aspetta cazzo, eh... adesso, aspetta!) now some black paint (...giù con quella testa! giù la testa nico... via via con quel coso lí porcoddio...) This is the head, this is the head-this is the head of the black death. The canvas and the photographers are covered with paint. I might add, its black paint and gold paint on a white canvas. (...un pochettino un pochettino! cosí cosí dai! più in lá!) (crowd) that was a — a big slash of paint. What is this. (Ah aaah ah ah [dialetto] è bellissimo?? non va più via... [dialetto] guarda, No, no, no! Eeehh!) Now he got even with the photographers who have been covering the canvas, And opens the canvas and out comes twelve pigeons! Ha ha ha! Work in Progress~3

Started in April of 2007, this trio of mixed media on masonite, each 18" x 24" are part of an ongoing video series I call "Work in Progress". The series is designed to illustrate one method I employ in my abstract work. This is all about a process, one that is without a doubt organic and spontaneous yet ironic in the considerable time it takes to reach its resolution. I have been hard at work and since you've last visited them the trio have received several thick coats of a polymer resin (material completely new to me) with a coat or two of enamel, watercolor and gouache work between each. The polymer actually magnifies aspects of the earlier work, has brought a glasslike luster and sheen to each piece and has neatly sealed it all in a transparent cocoon. Stay tuned for a brand new installment of "Work in Progress" very soon. The triptych continues to evolve and ~4 is in the works. ~jspen2

May Crowning

A sampling of some of my recent paintings. Included are a triptych called May Crowning (watch closely for the dissolves), a study of the microcosm called Accretion and my interpretation of Tolkien's "Leaf, By Niggle." Each piece measures 20x24 inches and are rendered in watercolor, gouache and enamel on masonite.

I continue to discover all the things a "lady" means--I paint them because I think they're beautiful or sad or revealing in another way. Not woman--but "lady," which transforms to "our lady of" and "goddess." Even self-portraits. -cms ps. i call ladies without faces "monsters."
